Help Victims Become Survivors
You may have attended the candlelit vigil honoring victims of domestic violence, seen the purple ribbons signifying awareness of the issue, or sipped a cup of coffee with a No More sticker on top. Now it’s time to top off your commitment to end abuse by supporting the good, difficult work of Helping Hands Against Violence at their annual auction gala on Saturday, Oct 24th at Springhouse Cellar, 6-9pm in Hood River. Admission is free (thanks to our sponsors Columbia Bank and Providence Hospital). Enjoy hearty appetizers and music (Kevin Holman) along with a plethora of creative auction items including everything from a kids’ day as a fireman to a case of locally raised lamb to multiple passes to Mt. Hood Meadows.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but every day is a good day to help someone get free from domestic violence—or to start a conversation about healthy relationships with your friends and family. And this year, at the gala, Helping Hands will be introducing a Millicent May Memorial Scholarship Fund for high school seniors in the memory of the dynamic woman who stuck her neck out to help victims become survivors and started Helping Hands 37 years ago.
How do you know if a friend is abused? Although there are the obvious physical signs, more often it’s the subtle ones: frequent absences from work or school, the inability to find time alone with her. Maybe it simply feels uncomfortable to see how your friend interacts with her/his partner.
How can you help her/him?
· Talk to her/him alone. Let her/him know that you’re concerned— but recognize your friend may try to minimize concerns.
· Be a good listener. Sometimes this is the most important thing you can do.
· Don’t say bad things about the victim’s partner. The victim may feel blamed.
· Let them know they are not alone. Give them Helping Hands 24/7 hotline 541.386.6603. We provide advocacy, shelter, and outreach.
