Lessons in leadership, strengthening communication skills and learning what legislators in other states are working on are just a few of the things Rep. Gina McCabe was able to engage in at the Western Legislative Academy, a training institution put on by the Council of State Governments West (CSG – West).
“The academy was a great opportunity to learn how to be a more effective legislator. I had the opportunity to talk with legislators from surrounding states on their priority issues, proposed legislation and how they govern,” said McCabe, R-Goldendale. “The faculty working with us included outstanding academics, corporate, military and public trainers.”
McCabe was chosen by bipartisan leadership as one of 44 Western state legislators selected from 105 applicants to receive a scholarship to take part in the training this year. The academy is for lawmakers in their first four years of service.
One of the presentations entitled – “Managing time you don’t seem to have” – was very relevant to what freshman lawmakers face in balancing their schedules.
“I am finishing up my first year in office and my calendar is full of legislative committee hearings, meetings and events. As a legislator you want to do all of it – meet with people, be out in the community – it is the part of the job I truly enjoy. However, at some point you need to be able prioritize and be as efficient with your time as possible. It makes you a more effective legislator. That was the goal of this presentation and many others at the academy,” said McCabe.
CSG – West is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization serving state legislators of both parties in 13 Western states. Admission to the academy is very competitive and based on commitment to public service, desire to improve personal legislative effectiveness and interest in improving the legislative process.
In the upcoming legislative session, McCabe will be serving on the House Business and Financial Service Committee and the House Labor Committee.
The session convenes on Jan. 11.
